Anchorage

Of all the world's cities, Anchorage uniquely combines the conveniences of the modern world with a rugged, natural environment that has all but vanished from populated regions of the world. It's an urban enclave surrounded by wilderness.

You can watch moose in the morning and ballet in the afternoon. You can take a short flight to see some of the most beautiful mountain scenery on earth, then be back for fresh seafood at local restaurant and a warm comfortable bed at a great hotel. The world's second highest tides surge against its shores, North America's highest peak glimmers in the distance, and the city parks and trails are vast enough to forget which century you live in.

Top Sights & Attractions

Anchorage is a perfect basecamp—you can experience much that Alaska has to offer, and never check out of your hotel. Flightsee over Denali, fish a wilderness river, or visit grizzly bears via air taxi. See calving glaciers and enormous whales on a day cruise. Hike to a glacier, climb a mountaintop, drive some of the world’s most spectacular highways, and bike our trails.

For culture and shopping, there's no better place in Alaska. Collect the prized works of Alaska's top artists and native craftspeople in galleries. Learn about our rich history in museums and heritage centers. Catch a show at one of our performance halls.

Where to Stay

In Anchorage, you can stay with a brand you're loyal to or opt for a locally owned hotel. Most properties are situated in a few distinct areas of town; Downtown, Midtown, U-med district, or South Anchorage. Downtown hotels are convenient for walking to shops and restaurants, as well as The Alaska Railroad Depot. Midtown hotels on Spenard are the closest to the airport - only about 5-minutes away. But, Anchorage isn't all that big. No matter where you stay, you won't be more than 15-minutes from the Airport. Here's a full run-down on how to choose your Anchorage hotel, and the list of properties we're proud to recommend.

Getting to Anchorage and Beyond

Anchorage has the main airpot hub of the region, the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. You'll find non-stop flights from many major cities like Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and more. You can also fly from Anchorage to other destinations in Alaska. For example, you can fly to Fairbanks in just over an hour, with flights offered by Alaska Airlines and Ravn Alaska. Juneau is only an hour and 45 minutes away.

Once you're here, it's easy to get around. Rent a car, motorhome or campervan, ride the Alaska Railroad, or buy a seat on a motorcoach. See our Anchorage Transportation page for how to get around Anchorage and beyond.
